Hakonechloa macra, also known as Japanese forest grass, is an elegant ornamental grass with arching, green leaves that turn a stunning golden-yellow in autumn. This hardy ornamental grass thrives in partial to full shade, making it one of the few grasses that performs exceptionally well in low-light conditions. The arching leaf blades create a waterfall-like effect, adding visual interest throughout the growing season. In autumn, the foliage transforms into warm golden-yellow and russet tones before going dormant in winter.
Hakonechloa macra grows 10-25cm in height and slowly spreads to form attractive clumping mounds. Native to the mountain woodlands of Japan, this deciduous grass is well-adapted to moist, well-drained soils rich in organic matter. It's deer-resistant, pest-resistant, and disease-resistant, making it an excellent low-maintenance choice for gardeners.
Planting & Care
Plant in partial to full shade with consistently moist, well-drained soil. This grass prefers humus-rich soil and benefits from regular watering, especially during dry periods. In late winter or early spring, cut back the previous year's foliage to ground level before new growth emerges. Apply a light mulch of well-rotted compost to retain moisture and protect the root zone.
Garden Uses
Ideal as ground cover in woodland gardens, along shaded pathways, or as edging for borders and beds. Works beautifully in rock gardens, Japanese-style gardens, and mixed perennial plantings. Pairs well with hostas, ferns, heucheras, and other shade-loving perennials. Also suitable for containers on shady patios or entryways where its cascading habit creates a striking focal point.
