Bamboo plants provide year-round evergreen screening, architectural form, and a distinctive sound in the breeze — all from a fast-growing plant that can reach full screening height in 2–3 seasons. Our bamboo collection focuses on non-invasive clumping varieties (Fargesia) and controllable running bamboos (Phyllostachys), all available with delivery across Europe.

Invasive vs Non-Invasive Bamboo — What's the Difference?

Running bamboo (Phyllostachys, Sasa) spreads via underground rhizomes and can travel 1–2 metres per year, invading neighbouring gardens. Clumping bamboo (Fargesia) forms tight, expanding clumps that never run — the rhizomes are pachymorph (U-shaped) rather than leptomorph (straight-running). For garden use without a root barrier, always choose Fargesia or other clumping genera. Phyllostachys varieties are only suitable when planted inside a root barrier (HDPE, 60cm deep) or in large containers.

Best Bamboo Varieties for European Gardens

  • Fargesia rufa ('Fountain Bamboo') — most popular clumping bamboo; arching canes; coppery new shoots in spring; hardy to -18°C; ideal for screening and containers
  • Fargesia murielae ('Umbrella Bamboo') — elegant arching habit; bright green canes; tolerates shade; very hardy (-26°C); perfect for difficult shaded spots
  • Fargesia nitida — upright form; purple-tinged canes; excellent in shade; very hardy; slower-growing than rufa
  • Phyllostachys aurea (in container) — golden canes; striking architectural effect; must be in a large container or behind a root barrier

How to Use Bamboo in the Garden

For privacy screening, plant Fargesia rufa at 60–90cm centres — plants establish a solid screen in 2–3 years. For containers, use a pot at least 60cm diameter; repot every 3–4 years when roots fill the pot. Feed monthly from April to August with a nitrogen-rich fertiliser to encourage cane growth. Water deeply in dry summers — bamboo is surprisingly thirsty despite its tough appearance.
