Why buy in packs

Borders look better planted in drifts

Garden designers repeat the same few plants through a bed. Packs make that easy, and young plants in 9cm pots settle in quickly.

  • Even, matching plants so a border fills out at the same rate
  • Enough to repeat in groups of three, five or seven for a natural look
  • Faster cover on bare ground, leaving less room for weeds
  • One free delivery for the whole project, tracked to your door
Planting season in Ireland

Plant in autumn, or next spring

Ireland's mild, damp climate gives you a long planting season. Autumn is the key window, spring is a close second.

  1. Autumn · September to November

The main window. The soil is still warm and the rain does the watering, so hedging, ground cover and perennials root in before spring.

  2. Winter · December to February

Pot-grown hedging and shrubs can still go in on mild days, as long as the ground is not frozen or waterlogged.

  3. Spring · March to May

The second window, and the best time for lavender and other sun-lovers in heavy, wet soil. Water through the first dry spells.

  4. Summer · June to August

Keep new plantings watered in dry weeks, then measure your beds and choose plants so they arrive for autumn.

FAQ

Landscaping questions, answered

What are the best landscaping plants for Irish gardens?
Plants that shrug off wet winters and mild summers do best. Reliable choices include hardy geraniums such as 'Rozanne' for long-flowering borders, Euonymus japonicus 'Green Spire' or Lonicera nitida for low evergreen hedging, Vinca minor and Geranium macrorrhizum for ground cover, and ornamental grasses such as Hakonechloa for movement. Browse the full landscaping plants collection.
When is the best time to plant in Ireland?
Autumn, from September to November, is the main planting window: the soil is still warm and regular rain helps roots settle before spring. Spring, from March to May, is the second-best window. Pot-grown plants can go in at other times too, as long as the ground is not frozen or waterlogged and you water through dry spells. See our seasonal planting guide.
How many plants do I need for a border?
For a natural look, plant perennials in groups of three, five or seven rather than singly, and repeat the same plants along the border. For ground cover and low hedges, our bulk orders page has a planting quantity guide per square metre and per metre of hedge.
What can I plant instead of box hedging?
Box blight has made Buxus hard to keep healthy in many Irish gardens. Popular evergreen alternatives for low, clipped hedges are Euonymus japonicus 'Green Spire' and Lonicera nitida. Our guide to hedging and box blight alternatives compares them.
Will bamboo take over my garden?
Not if you choose a clumping type. Fargesia bamboos, such as Fargesia rufa, grow in a tight clump rather than sending out long running roots, which makes them a good choice for screening in smaller gardens.
What size are the plants in your packs?
Most perennial, ground cover and hedging packs are young plants in 9cm pots, typically 10–25cm tall. Climbers and bamboo come as larger potted plants. Each product page lists the exact pot size and height.
