Box blight and box tree moth
Box blight (a fungal disease) and the box tree moth are the two problems that most often end box hedges. A cultivar bred for blight resistance lowers the risk of blight but is not immune, and it does not protect against the moth. Check plants regularly from spring to autumn for webbing and caterpillars, clip in dry weather, keep tools clean and avoid wetting the foliage. If you would rather avoid both problems, see our box hedge alternatives.
Planting and clipping
Plant in sun or part shade in well-drained soil. A low hedge from 20 to 25cm plants typically takes about 4 to 5 plants per metre, or plant closer to fill sooner. Every pack is young plants in pots, shipped directly from our partner growers, so allow a few seasons for a hedge to knit together and water through the first two summers.
Frequently asked questions
Is box blight a risk in Ireland?
It can be, particularly in damp, still conditions. Good air movement, dry-weather clipping and clean tools reduce the risk, and blight-resistant cultivars help but are not a guarantee.
Do these protect against box tree moth?
No. Blight resistance does not stop the moth, so check plants for caterpillars and webbing during the growing season.
How many plants do I need per metre?
For a low hedge from 20 to 25cm plants, about 4 to 5 per metre. The 1 metre pack contains 6 plants.
Are these full-size hedge plants?
No. They are young plants in 7 to 19cm pots; larger sizes are the box balls and pyramids.
