Japanese holly (Ilex crenata) has small, fine, glossy leaves that clip into a dense, box-like hedge or ball. It is not the spiny, berrying holly (Ilex aquifolium) used for Christmas wreaths. Choose from Jenny, Convexa, Stokes and Golden Gem, plus ready-shaped balls and pyramids. Free tracked delivery to Ireland and 24 more EU countries.

A box alternative
Box blight is a disease of Buxus and a few close relatives, so Ilex crenata is not a typical host, and box tree moth has so far been recorded only on box in Europe. No plant is guaranteed free of every pest or disease. For comparisons with other substitutes see our box hedge alternatives.
Planting and clipping
Plant in sun or part shade in well-drained, moisture-retentive soil and clip once or twice a year. Packs of 24 and 40 are young plants in 9cm pots, 20 to 30cm tall. Every pack is young plants in pots, shipped directly from our partner growers, so allow a few seasons for a hedge to knit together and water through the first two summers.
Frequently asked questions
Is Japanese holly the same as Christmas holly?
No. Ilex crenata has small, smooth leaves and is grown for clipped shapes; the traditional Christmas holly is Ilex aquifolium.
Is it a good alternative to box?
It is one of the closest in look, with small glossy leaves that clip tightly, and box blight is not a typical problem for it.
How many per metre?
For a low clipped hedge from young plants, about 5 to 8 per metre depending on the variety.
Can I buy topiary shapes?
Yes. Ready-shaped balls and pyramids are included when in stock.
