Growing Conditions
Waldsteinia ternata performs exceptionally well in both sunny and shaded locations, making it ideal for difficult garden areas under trees, along pathways, or on slopes for erosion control. This ground cover spreads via surface runners to form a thick, weed-suppressing mat. The strawberry-like foliage remains attractive throughout winter, with leaves sometimes taking on bronze tones in colder months.
Planting and Care
Space plants 25-30cm apart for optimal coverage. These hardy perennials establish quickly in average, well-drained soil and require minimal maintenance once settled. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep root system. Once established, Waldsteinia ternata is drought tolerant and requires little attention.
Ideal Uses
Perfect for ground cover under shrubs and trees, along borders, in rock gardens, or as a lawn alternative in shaded areas. The dense growth habit makes it excellent for erosion control on banks and slopes. Works well in woodland gardens, shade gardens, and naturalized areas.
