Liriope muscari 'Ingwersen' - Clump-Forming Lily Turf

Liriope muscari 'Ingwersen' (also known as Classic Blue or Lily Turf) is a clump-forming evergreen perennial with dark green, grass-like foliage that provides year-round structure to borders and garden beds. This hardy plant produces striking lavender-purple flower spikes from late summer through autumn, rising above the glossy, strap-like leaves to create beautiful vertical interest.

Key Features

This versatile perennial forms dense, neat clumps that stay where you plant them - unlike spreading varieties, 'Ingwersen' does not spread by rhizomes, making it ideal for controlled borders and edging. The plant reaches a mature height of 10-15 inches (25-40cm) with a spread of 12-18 inches (30-45cm), creating a low-maintenance groundcover that suppresses weeds effectively.

Liriope muscari 'Ingwersen' thrives in both sunny and shady locations, tolerating a wide range of conditions including drought, heat, and poor soil once established. This makes it an excellent choice for difficult areas such as under trees, on slopes, or in dry shade where other plants struggle. The plant is also deer and rabbit resistant.

Garden Uses

Perfect for creating defined borders along pathways, driveways, and garden beds, this lily turf also works well as groundcover in mass plantings, erosion control on banks and slopes, and as edging for mixed beds. The grass-like texture contrasts beautifully with broader-leaved plants, while the mid-summer flower spikes add seasonal color when many other perennials have finished blooming.

Growing Conditions

Plant in moist, well-drained soil in full sun to full shade. Space plants 12-18 inches apart for borders or closer for faster coverage. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Once established, 'Ingwersen' requires minimal care - simply cut back old foliage in late winter before new growth emerges to maintain a tidy appearance.
