60 Euonymus japonicus 'Green Spire' Hedge Plants
A pack of 60 young Euonymus japonicus 'Green Spire' for a low, clipped evergreen hedge, a border edge or a box-style parterre. Green Spire is the plant most often chosen in Ireland as a box hedge alternative: it has small glossy dark-green leaves, grows upright and dense, and takes close clipping well. Each plant arrives in a 9cm pot at about 10–25cm tall, ready to plant in a single row.
What you receive
- 60 individual Euonymus japonicus 'Green Spire' plants, shipped directly from our partner growers.
- Pot size 9cm; supplied height approx. 10–25cm (the delivery height, not the finished hedge height).
- Enough for roughly 8.5–12 metres of single-row hedge at 5–7 plants per metre.
Why Green Spire as a box alternative
- Evergreen and glossy — keeps its colour through Irish winters; hardy to about -10°C (RHS H5).
- Upright, narrow habit — suits a boundary or path edge where you cannot give up much width; clipped hedges are usually kept at 30–80cm.
- Not a box — Green Spire is not susceptible to box blight, and in Europe the box tree moth has so far only been recorded on Buxus. No plant is guaranteed free of every pest, but switching from box removes the two problems that most often end box hedges.
- Easy on site — full sun or partial shade; clay, sandy, loam and chalky soils; copes with wind and coastal gardens.
How many plants do you need?
For a low clipped hedge from 10–25cm plants, plan on 5–7 plants per metre in a single row; closer spacing closes the hedge sooner. Measure the hedge in metres and multiply. A 10-metre hedge at 6 plants per metre needs 60 plants, which is this pack. See the Green Spire spacing guide for spacing by hedge height, or the hedging in Ireland guide for planting step by step.
Planting and care
Plant in autumn (October–November) or early spring (February–March) when the ground is workable. Dig a trench twice the width of the pots, set each plant at the depth it grew in the pot, firm in and water well. Water through the first two summers in dry spells and mulch to hold moisture. Trim lightly once or twice a year to build a dense shape. In Ireland the Wildlife Act restricts cutting hedges between 1 March and 31 August, with limited exceptions, so check the current rules before you trim.
