Euonymus is a tough evergreen shrub with two jobs in the garden. Upright Euonymus japonicus (Japanese spindle) clips into a dense evergreen hedge, and trailing Euonymus fortunei (wintercreeper) carpets the ground in sun or shade. Choose from packs of 6 to 72 young plants in pots, including 'Green Spire', 'Paloma Blanca', 'White Spire', 'Emerald Gaiety', 'Minimus' and 'Dart's Blanket'. Free tracked delivery across Ireland and 24 more EU countries.
Pick by the job: an upright type for hedging and screening, a trailing type for ground cover. Stock changes through the year, and this page lists only what is available now.

Supplied height is the height of the young plant on delivery, not its mature size or the height you keep it at by clipping.
Japanese spindle clips well and keeps its leaves all year, which is why gardeners use it for low and medium hedges and as an alternative to box. It does best in free-draining soil in sun or part shade. Keep the young plants watered through their first summer, trim lightly once or twice a year in the growing season to build density, and cut out any plain green shoots on variegated types. Every pack is young plants in pots, so allow a few seasons for a hedge to knit together. For a comparison with other substitutes see our box hedge alternatives.
Wintercreeper roots as its stems run along the ground, so it fills in to a dense evergreen mat that helps keep weeds down once it has joined up. It copes with shade and with slopes. As a guide, plant 9 cm pot plants about 30–40 cm apart, which takes roughly 6 to 11 plants per square metre; closer planting fills in faster.
Yes. It is evergreen, clips tightly and suits low to medium hedges and screening in sun or part shade. Plan on a few seasons for young plants to form a continuous hedge.
Euonymus japonicus is an upright shrub grown for hedges and screening. Euonymus fortunei is a trailing wintercreeper grown as ground cover or trained up walls and fences.
Euonymus fortunei copes well with shade. Euonymus japonicus grows in sun or part shade, and variegated forms colour best in good light.
It depends on the variety and the hedge you want. Green Spire is typically planted at about 5–7 plants per metre for a low hedge; Paloma Blanca and White Spire are suggested at about 30–40 cm apart.
