Helleborus niger 'Christmas Carol' is the Christmas rose: a compact evergreen perennial with pure white, golden-centred flowers in the depths of winter. It is a lovely plant for shady borders, woodland corners and winter pots, and the flowers can be floated in a bowl indoors. This listing is 24 young plants in 7cm pots (4 six-packs).
- Bowl-shaped white flowers with golden stamens
- Flowers from midwinter into early spring, usually January to March; in a mild spell buds can open earlier, but not reliably by Christmas
- Leathery, dark green evergreen leaves
- About 30-40cm tall at maturity
- Part to full shade, in moist, well-drained soil
- Young plants can take a season or two to flower freely
Plant in autumn or winter in humus-rich soil in part shade, or in a deep pot with a gritty, peat-free compost. Trim tatty old leaves in late winter so the flowers show. Wear gloves when handling: the sap can irritate skin, and all parts are harmful if eaten.
Supplied as young plants in growing pots, shipped directly from our partner growers. Plants are living products, so size and shape can vary slightly from the photo.
