48 English Lavender Plants — Lavandula angustifolia
A bulk pack of 48 young English lavender plants, supplied as eight groups of six, for a scented low hedge, a sunny path edge or a mass planting on a dry bank. Lavandula angustifolia is the hardiest of the lavenders and the one to choose for Irish gardens: silver-grey evergreen foliage all year and violet-blue flower spikes from June to August that bees and butterflies work all summer. Each plant arrives in a 7cm pot at about 15cm tall.
What you receive
- 48 Lavandula angustifolia plants in total (8 × 6), shipped directly from our partner growers.
- Pot size 7cm; supplied height approx. 15cm (the delivery height, not the mature size).
- Enough for roughly 12–16 metres of informal lavender edging at 3–4 plants per metre, or about 8 square metres planted 5–6 per square metre.
Where it grows best
- Full sun and free-draining soil; sandy, loam and chalky soils suit it, heavy wet clay does not unless you raise the bed or add grit.
- Hardy to about -10°C (RHS H5), and happy in coastal and windy gardens.
- Drought-tolerant once established, so it suits gravel gardens, dry banks and containers; water it in the first summer while the roots settle.
- Grows to about 50–60cm tall and wide, and can be kept smaller with an annual trim.
How many plants do you need?
For a low scented edge, plan on 3–4 plants per metre in a single row. A 12-metre path edge at 4 per metre needs 48 plants, which is this pack. For a block planting, use 5–6 plants per square metre. See the hedging in Ireland guide for planting step by step.
Planting and care
Plant in spring or early autumn into well-drained soil in full sun. Water in well, then only in dry spells during the first summer. Trim after flowering, cutting the flowered stems back to just above the leafy growth, and never into old bare wood. A light second trim in early spring keeps the plants compact. Lavender needs no feeding on most soils.
