Sansevieria zeylanica is the toughest large houseplant you can buy. At 120cm tall in a 27cm pot, this is a floor-standing specimen — architectural, upright and immediately the strongest shape in a room, with dark green sword-like leaves banded in pale grey-green.
It is also close to unkillable, which is why it suits Irish homes so well. Sansevieria tolerates low light, dry air from central heating, and long gaps between waterings. If you have lost plants to a north-facing room or to forgetting about them for a fortnight, this is the one that forgives you.
Care at a glance
- Light: anything from bright indirect to genuinely low light. Avoid harsh direct midday sun.
- Water: every 3–4 weeks in summer, every 6–8 weeks in winter. Let the compost dry out completely first — overwatering is the only thing that reliably kills it.
- Temperature: 15–24°C. Keep it above 10°C and away from cold draughts.
- Humidity: no special requirement — it is happy in dry centrally heated rooms.
- Feeding: a half-strength houseplant feed once or twice over the growing season is plenty.
Where to put it
Its height makes it a natural for a hallway, a living-room corner, beside a desk, or either side of a doorway as a pair. It is a common choice for bedrooms because it continues releasing oxygen at night through CAM photosynthesis, unlike most houseplants.
